Prerogative of Mercy: Minister urges caution

By Okon Okon

Senator George Akume, Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, warned the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy (PACPM) in the performance of its duties.

The minister, who gave the advice when he reconvened the PACPM committee members in his office, said the caveat was to avoid releasing unrepentant criminals into society.

In a statement by Julie Osagie, deputy director of press at the special functions office, on Tuesday in Abuja, Akume reminded the PACPM committee to work in accordance with its objectives.

Akume recalled that PACPM was supposed to review, select and determine convicts / ex-convicts for pardon on recommendation to the National Council of State, headed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

He warned committee members that any mistake on their part could cause more social problems in the country.

“Mr. President will count on you as a committee to do what is required of him by the constitution to grant pardon to deserving inmates, convicts and ex-prisoners in order to decongest correctional centers nationwide,” Akume said.

In addition, Mr. Abubakar Malami, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, who served as the chairman of the committee, noted that it had become opportune for the PACPM to meet again as the secretariat of the committee. .

According to him, there are more than 320 requests, asking for the granting of presidential pardon and clemency on behalf of some convicted in detention centers across the country.

Malami urged committee members to consider the claims objectively, based on the facts before them, in the public interest as well as in the interests of justice.

The committee members are Anthonia Ekpa, Ayoola Daniels, Usendiah Joseph, CP Shehu Gwarzo, Albert Uko, Professor Auwal Yadudu, Debbie Obodoukwu, Lucy Ajayi and Joshua Abu.

The others are BA Ogunbambi, Yetunde Haastrup and Angela Jim-Jaja, director at the Ministry of Special Functions and Intergovernmental Affairs, who will serve as secretary of the committee. (www.)
