Police nab suspected kidnapper in Delta, recover ammunition, cash

Police Command in Delta has detained a 36-year-old alleged kidnapper, recovering ammunition and the sum of N410,000 from him.

This was announced by the command spokesman, DSP Bright Edafe, in a statement made available to journalists on Tuesday in Warri.

Edafe said the suspect was caught on Monday by police officers attached to the Oghara Division in the Ethiope West local government area of the state, after a thorough intelligence gathering.

He said the suspect and two other members of his gang, now on the run, had kidnapped a pastor along with his truck in Benin-City on Sunday.

“On January 10, around 10:30 am, the DPO, Oghara Division, CSP Jimoh Hassan, received information from the DPO, New Etete Division in Benin City that a pastor was kidnapped along with his Lexus SUV, with registration number: KWL 510 BH.

“After a thorough investigation led by technical intelligence, it was revealed that the vehicle was parked on the Ibori road in Oghara.

“The DPO, Oghara division, detailed and led the agents to the area where the vehicle was sighted and the agents ambushed for the suspects to appear,” he said.

Mr. Edafe further claimed that three men later appeared to collect the vehicle and were detained, adding, however, that two of them later escaped and the remainder was arrested.

He said that during questioning, the suspect confessed to being a member of the union that kidnapped the Benin-based pastor.

The police spokesman added that the suspect took the officers to a hotel in Oghareki where they were hibernating.

“Upon arriving at the hotel, the owner of the facility helped the other two suspects escape and fled,” he said.

Edafe said the suspect led officers to his hotel room, where a custom-cut double-barreled pistol, six live cartridges and the sum of N410,000, which was part of the N500,000 ransom, were recovered.

He said the suspect also led the operatives to another room, where another double-barreled pistol, 10 live rounds and a laptop were recovered.

Edafe added that the victim’s vehicle was also recovered and added that a pursuit of the fleeing suspects was initiated.
