Police confirm 11 deaths in Igangan Community attack

By Suleiman Shehu

The Oyo State Police Command confirmed the deaths of 11 people in the attack on Saturday night in the community of Igangan , a town in the Ibarapa North local government area.

The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reports that suspected gunmen stormed the city on Saturday around 11:10 pm on motorcycles, and allegedly opened fire on innocent citizens and burned property.

State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) DSP Adewale Osifeso said in a statement Sunday in Ibadan.

Osifeso said a total of 11 people, including some of the attackers, have been confirmed dead in the incident.

The PPRO said a number of vehicles and buildings, including the Asigangan Palace in Igangan City and a gas station, were razed to the ground.

According to him, the police commissioner, Ngozi Onadeko, made an on-site assessment visit to the city on Sunday to critically assess the level and cause of the damage.

“Intelligence and tactical devices, composed of members of the mobile police force, patrol units and other tactical teams, in concert with local hunters and the community vigilance group, have been deployed to prevent a further breach of public order in the region, ”he declared.

Osifeso added that the commissioner had expressed the command’s condolences to the families of the deceased, promising justice will prevail.

He then called on the Igangan community to trust the system and avoid self-help for justice.

The commissioner urged them to partner with the police in quickly sharing intelligence reports relevant to ongoing investigations. (NAA)
