The police, on Tuesday, arraigned a 46-year-old mechanic, Atanda Olorunwa, before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a bus.
The defendant, who is of no fixed address, is standing trial on a two-count charge of theft and fraud.
The police prosecutor, Sgt. Olubu Apata, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on May 2, in Ifaki-Ekiti.
Apata alleged that the defendant stole one 18-seater Toyota bus, valued at N1.6 million, belonging to one Mr Gbenga Agunbiade.
The prosecutor said that the defendant, on Nov. 4, 2018, also obtained the sum of N430,000 from one Mrs Olamide Adebayo, under the pretext of selling a car to her.
He said that the offences contravened Sections 390(9) and 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate, Mrs Kehinde Awosika, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties in like sum.
Awosika said that the two sureties must be a civil servant on Grade Level 14 and above.
She adjourned the case till Jan. 27, 2020, for hearing.
