Philippines’ Duterte lashes out at ICC over drug war probe

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has attacked the International Criminal Court (ICC) for an ongoing investigation into murders linked to his administration’s crackdown on illegal drugs.

In a televised address Monday night, Duterte said the ICC was “bullshit” and that he would not cooperate with their investigation.

“Why would I want to defend [myself] or face a charge before the Whites? You must be crazy, ”he said.

“They are former settlers, they did not atone for their sins against the countries they invaded, including the Philippines.”

“Now they are trying to set up a tribunal outside our country and expose us to face them,” he added.

“Our laws are different. Our criminal procedure is very different. How are you supposed to get justice there? “

The ICC began a preliminary review of the Philippine government’s crackdown on illegal drugs on February 8, 2018.

Last week, outgoing chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda said she was seeking a full investigation, citing “a reasonable basis to believe that the crime against humanity of murder” was committed as part of the war campaign against illegal drugs.

Duterte, who was elected president in 2016 on an anti-crime platform, said he would easily face charges “in front of a Filipino judge.”

More than 7,000 people have been killed in police operations against illegal drugs in the Philippines over the past five years. Human rights groups have alleged the toll could even be three times higher.

Questions have also arisen as to whether the suspects were extrajudicially killed by the police and whether any of those killed played a role in the drug sale. (Dpa / NAN)
