Some residents of Maiduguri in Borno have expressed their joy at the peaceful Christmas celebration across the state.

A representative sample of residents, who spoke in separate interviews with the Nigerian News Agency on Wednesday in Maiduguri, described the holiday period as peaceful compared to previous years.

Marcus Buba, a resident, thanked God for the relative peace and traffic-free Christmas celebration in the state.

“We celebrate Christmas and observe Boxing Day smoothly as we look forward to the New Year by the grace of God.

“We have every reason to thank the Lord for his mercies and blessings,” he said.

Abraham Musa, Ismaila Yakubu and Elizabeth Dauda, who corroborated earlier views, also prayed for lasting peace in the state.

Also commenting, ASP Sani Kamilu, Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Borno Police Command, said that the command had deployed adequate personnel to ensure peaceful celebrations during Christmas.

Kamilu said the command had stepped up surveillance and patrols in collaboration with sister security agencies and urged people to respect the law and be safety conscious.

Sanusi Ibrahim, Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, in the state, stated that there was no traffic accident in a state-wide period.

Mr. Ibrahim commended motorists and other road users for observing traffic rules and regulations that facilitated the free flow of traffic in the state.

He said the Corps had deployed 500 staff members under “Operation Zero Tolerance for Traffic Accidents” to ensure sanity on the roads.

Bukus James, a spokesman for the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC, said the celebrations were generally peaceful across the state.

“The State Commander, Mr. Musa Farouk, personally led the patrol on Christmas Day, to ensure safety against water around the places of worship,” he said.
