A pastor dies while separating a couple

By Ikechukwu Iweajunwa

The police command in Imo has confirmed the death of a senior pastor in Owerri, Thompson Onyekwuru, as he tried to separate a fight between a couple in the state.

Police confirmed the incident on Monday in a statement from command spokesperson SP Mike Abattam.

Abattam said the incident occurred at Umukoto Nekede in Owerri, adding that Onyekwuru was a pastor of the Redeem Christian Church of God (RCCG) in the state.

Police said Onyekwuru, 62, was trying to stop Obumneke Onyemechileuzo from stabbing his wife, Ogechi Onyemechileuzo, during a scuffle between the couple, before he was allegedly killed.

Abattam said the husband, Obumneke, later died from a gunshot wound he suffered.

“Following a distress call on 7/19/2021 around 2 p.m., at the divisional police headquarters in Nekede, Owerri, this man named Obumneke Onyemechileuzo armed with a kitchen knife beat his wife, Ogechi Favor Onyemechileuzo.

“When a pastor of Redeem Christian Church Owerri, Pastor Thompson Onyekwuru, intervened to prevent him from stabbing his wife, the suspect rushed at him, stabbed him in the back and he fell unconscious.

“Upon arriving at the scene, the police team saw the suspect severely beat his wife, threatening to stab her, and ran to prevent him from stabbing his wife.

“Upon seeing the police, he attempted to stab one of the officers in the neck and was shot in the leg in self-defense.

“He fell and was immediately disarmed.

“But the victims and the suspect were rushed to Rosana Hospital where the doctor on duty referred the victims to Human Race Hospital, where the pastor and the suspect were confirmed dead.

“The woman was admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit and is responding to treatment, while the corpses were then dropped off at the Agbala morgue in Agbala,” Abattam said.

The command spokesperson said the coin knife was taken to the station, while the police commissioner ordered a quiet investigation into the case to elucidate the cause of the incident.

“The CP also advised the community to keep the peace, obey the law and go about their legitimate business pending the outcome of the investigation,” he said. (NAA)
