Oyo development agency completes 788 projects

Published

on

Dr Idowu Oyeleke, the Board Chairman of Oyo State Community and Social Development Agency (OYCSDA), says the agency has completed 788 projects in 158 communities across the state.

Oyeleke, who said this in a statement in Ibadan on Monday, added that the projects included rural electrification, water provision health care services, education, environment and social economic empowerment.

He said the projects were part of the state government’s efforts toward boosting the standard of living of the people in rural areas.

“The World Bank Assisted Community and Social Development Project empowers communities to develop, implement and monitor micro social infrastructural projects in their community.

“The benefitting rural communities have been relieved as a result of the present administration’s efforts at strengthening the partnership with the World Bank in reducing poverty in the state.

” Before now, most women in the rural areas faced high risk of medical complications due to non-availability of health care services, while most communities were exposed to various water-borne diseases as a result of lack of potable water,” he said.

Oyeleke said the intervention of the present administration in the state had achieved reduction in maternal death rate and water borne diseases while many communities in darkness had been connected to the national grid.

“The beauty of the Community and Social Development Project is that the benefitting communities prioritise their needs, observing all processes, get approval and execute projects through their preferred service provider.

“Benefitting communities should ensure effective maintainance and sustain all projects in their domains,” he said.

Youths should be drivers of innovation, creativity for a better Nigeria- Ex-VC Bell University

Published

on

Prof. Isaac Adeyemi, the former Vice Chancellor, Bells University of Technology, Ogun, has charged Nigerian youths to harnessy their knowledge via the internet to be drivers of innovation and creativity for a better Nigeria.

Adeyemi gave the charge at the Mentoring and Capacity Building Summit of Shining Star Initiative International (SSII), an NGO, in Ibadan on Sunday.

According to him, the outbreak of COVID-19 is a game changer; it has changed everything and as such one should think of post COVID-19 activities and actions that will enable one to stay afloat.

“The youths are the most vulnerable to the post COVID-19 events, including the educational system.

“To position themselves for a successful career, the youths being exposed to technology should take the initiative to see to it that they use the knowledge for innovation and creativity.

‘’That will develop the economy of the country because each country is trying to design means of survival to float,” Adeyemi said.

The former VC said through collaboration with local or international agencies or organisations, some of which are online, youth can leverage and adapt knowledge to suit local situations.

“This can translate into national or state activities that can grow the economy of Nigeria and put it in the global stage.

Also speaking at the event, Prof. Seyi Osunade, Associate Professor, Computer Science department, University of Ibadan, said based on what was happening right now with the effects of COVID-19 pandemic, government and education stakeholders should do more of advocacy.

“That is creating an awareness for the youths on what the pandemic is, that it is real and people still need to take precautions.

“Though the number of infected people are dropping, people still need to take precautions and as schools are preparing to resume, people should work towards maintaining the safety protocols and adhere to COVID-19 guidelines.

“Our curriculum should focus more on practical skills and expressions, that is they should teach things that our students can do here to provide local solutions to our challenges.

“Things they can develop into products, because if we can adapt the knowledge we have into a working solution it will go a long way for us.

“Technical and vocational education should be encouraged more even in our normal school curriculum,” Osunade said.

The Pioneer of SSII, Mrs Omokehinde Deji-Akinpelu said the organisation was focused on community service.

She said that the initiative started formally in 2014 with mentoring of undergraduate students at Lead City University.

Deji-Akinpelu stated that the vision of the organization was to raise purpose driven young men and women who would become world renowned in conduct, character and competence.

“We are set out to impart them with positive values and right attitude to life that will enable them become accountable and responsible adults

“You will agree with me that part of what we are facing today with our political leaders in Nigeria is lack of right mentoring.

“Some of these youths are taking wrong steps and decisions because they lack right and proper mentoring, we need to address this for a better Nigeria.”

Deji-Akinpelu further stated that youths would rather model their lives after celebrities and people they don’t even have direct access to and that had its disadvantages.

Two of the participants who spoke to NAN, Oluwatobi Oduola and Ayomide Olukorede said their passion to influence teenagers and mentor them towards greatness fueled their participation.

They identified lack of sense of direction and career choice as major challenges teenagers are faced with and the need to help as many youths to succeed in life despite all odds.

Chief Adegboyega Adegoke, the Executive Director, OES Energy Services Limited, has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State.

He made the announcement while addressing his supporters on Sunday in Ibadan.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Adegoke, a political disciple of Sen. Rasheed Ladoja, is the Ajia-Balogun Olubadan of Ibadanland.

NAN also recalled that Adegoke contested the House of Representatives seat for  Ibadan South-West/North-West Federal constituency in 2015 on the platform of Accord Party (AP) and lost.

He was also part of those who worked for the emergence of the present administration of Gov. Seyi Makinde under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

Adegoke, who is eyeing the Oyo South Senatorial seat, said his decision was after several consultation with his political associates, leaders and supporters across the 33 local government of the state.

He dismissed speculations that he was still in the PDP, assuring his supporters that he was in the APC fully.

Adegoke thanked his supporters for their concern on the matter, saying there was no cause for alarm.

According to him, “Few days ago there was a fake news story that I, Olooye Adegboyega Taofeek Adegoke has decided to stay back in the PDP.

“Nothing could be far from the truth. I am in APC 100 percent and will remain in APC. Please disregard such fake news. Just be calm, there is no cause for alarm as victory is certain by His Grace.”

NAN reports that the Ibadan-born politician had been sighted at various reconciliation meetings of the APC in the state.

Supporters expressed joy over the news coming from their political leader and benefactor.

Schneider Electric develops equipment for DISCOS to fix grid faults, restore power in minutes

Published

on

Schneider Electric has developed intelligent equipment that will help electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) and others to fix major faults in the nation’s grid system and restore power after disruption within minutes.

The equipment is known as “Self-Healing Grid’’ solution with minimal human intervention, the leading digital transformation, energy management and automation giant said.

The Head of Offer, Strategy and Business Development, Schneider Electric, Mr Ifeanyi Odoh, who made the disclosure on Sunday said the company had also held a one-day utility end- user training organised in collaboration with Bolarmark Engineering Ltd. in Lagos.

Odoh said the products which include the Smart Ringmaster (RTU T300 & SCADA); Pix Rof and Auto-Reclosers would also be useful to other stakeholders in the power sector.

“What we have done basically is to provide more intelligent and advanced equipment that enables systems to be smart grid ready and to be able to at the basic level, restore service operation automatically within seconds needing less human intervention.

“As such, it reduces operational downtime of DISCOs) to less than a minute,’’ he said in a statement.

According to Odoh, the new solutions will save DISCOs significant operational costs, time and money. With the aid of equipment such as the Ringmaster RMU, switchgears, transformers, transient or passive faults which occur 75 per cent of the time, will be addressed. This will save downtime for DISCOs.

“Take for example, you are driving and you knock down a pole, the system will isolate the line feeding that particular point as close as possible, localise the fault and restore power to the rest of the community not affected so that only that particular pole would then be localised or separated for manual intervention.’’

He also disclosed that the training had over 30 participants from about five electricity distribution companies and other stakeholders in attendance.

The participants were drawn from Eko, Ikeja Abuja Ibadan Lagos State Electricity Board, Viathan Utility and  Bolamark Engineering Ltd.

It centred on improving the grid reliability and efficiency, getting DISCOs to improve on System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) and System Average Frequency Index (SAFI).

It also examined improving energy efficiency to minimise technical and non-technical losses and distributed energy resource integration to enhance grid stability and accommodate alternative sources of energy like solar, wind, gas among others.

The Head Channel Marketing, Omobolanle Omotayo, said the solutions would benefit not just the DISCOs but also consumers with the aid of smart devices such as efficient utility meters, sensors and release devices connected to software that could be read on mobile devices, or on the web and managed remotely to reduce the face to face time.

The statement said that PAE and Product Manager for Schneider Electric, Moyosore Oyefuga, while speaking, noted that the new equipment would bring extra level of visibility on the network so that DISCOs could accurately improve their forecast and make more informed decisions.

He explained that the equipment would help to reduce the issue of load shedding by the companies.

““With the kind of automations we bring, some loads could be deferred if for any reason, DISCOs realise that there is a little bit more demand than supply or vice versa.’’
