By Julius Toba-JegedeGov. Adegboyega Oyetola of Osun has commended the Federal Government on its efforts at building infrastructure across the country.

The governor gave the commendation in Abuja when he featured on Forum, an interview programme of the News Agency of Nigeria .

He said the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration had done so well by paying attention to infrastructure development in the country through embarking on new projects and completing abandoned ones.

“Infrastructure is one area that has always been in demand by our people.

” I think it is very important for government, both at federal and state levels, to show serious commitment to infrastructure.

” I must commend the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari for taking time to really address the decay in infrastructure in the country. This decay is huge. He is doing wonderfully well both in terms of roads and rail line projects.

“If you don’t allow people to have access to mobility, then you cannot have development.

” Again, there can never be economic development without adequate infrastructure,’’ he said.

The governor said he was replicating the same laudable strides in Osun by completing abandoned projects and building new ones.

“So, what we have embarked on in Osun is to ensure that we identify critical roads, some of these roads have not been rehabilitated for up to 20, 30 years.

“I am talking about critical roads that are seriously in demand by a number of communities.

” When I went for a thank you tour, that was another thing they asked for.

” We tried to put most of the demands together, had our costing which if going to fix all the roads they are talking about, they will cost more than N50 billion and I don’t have it.

“But we tried to introduce the same PPP approach to what we are doing.

” Don’t forget that I have not less than 30 years experience in the private sector and it helps me to be able to look at the synergy between the private and public sectors.

” If you are able to combine the two, goverce will be quite interesting.

“We are partnering with contractors who have the resources to fix some of these roads using their funds. Then we try to have an arrangement to pay back within a space of time.

” We call it alternative project fund approach which means — you don’t have the resources to fix your infrastructure, but you have your integrity and you plan to fix the roads for people to make use of.

‘’We are doing the Olaiya overhead bridge as we speak, and for those who have had the opportunity of being in Osun, that project is iconic.

” That project is estimated to be about N2.7 billion and that’s the cheapest you can get anywhere in the world.

” The project is expected to be finished in nine months and it’s already 60 per cent completed.

” By the grace of God, by the time we are doing our third year anniversary in office, that bridge should be ready for commissioning,’’ he said.
