OPEC to mark 50th anniversary of Nigeria’s membership

By Edith Ike-Eboh

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) will mark the 50th anniversary of Nigeria’s membership in the organization on July 12.

OPEC Secretary General Dr Mohammad Barkindo made the revelation in a statement on Tuesday.

The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reports that Nigeria was unanimously accepted as the 11th member of OPEC on July 12, 1971.

According to Barkindo, this day was of historic significance for Nigeria and OPEC.

He said: “To commemorate this historic date, the OPEC Secretariat has produced a special OPEC newsletter.

“The edition will look at the history of Nigeria’s relations with OPEC, including the many giants of the Nigerian civil service, who have been responsible for the successful five-decade relationship that has evolved with OPEC.

“We will be interviewing high profile figures and examining and exploring other topical issues concerning Nigeria. “

Barkindo said the central interview would be with President Muhammadu Buhari, whom he described as an OPEC veteran for over 40 years.

According to him, Buhari has been heavily involved in the affairs of the organization.

“OPEC has been fortunate to benefit from the talent, wisdom and extraordinary abilities of generations of Nigerian civil servants.

“They have been an integral part of what the organization has accomplished.

“During the five decades of OPEC membership, Nigeria has been a constructive partner, seeking consensus and always encouraging compromise.

“OPEC’s Special Bulletin highlights all of this.

“The unique relationship between OPEC and Nigeria has been mutually beneficial and laden with a plethora of successes.

“The golden anniversary of Nigeria’s membership is indeed a cause for celebration.

“I really hope all Nigerians celebrate with us, not only reflecting on the past, but also considering how we can build a more prosperous future together,” he said.

He added that the OPEC Secretary General will deliver a keynote address at the 20th Nigeria Oil and Gas Conference to be held July 5-8.

He said the conference would refer to the positivity and longevity of Nigeria’s relationship with OPEC. (NAA)
