Ondo FA hunts for grassroots talent

By Segun Giwa

Former Ondo Football Association (FA) President Dele Ogungbemi said the football competition between high schools in the Okeigbo community is about identifying the talents who will represent the community in future competitions.

Ogungbemi revealed this in an interview with the Nigerian News Agency (NAN) on Sunday in Okeigbo during the final of the 90th anniversary celebration football competition “Oba Lawrence Babajide Bamgbala 1”.

The competition was held to commemorate the celebration of the 90th anniversary of the kingdom of Oluoke of Okeigbo, Oba Lawrence Bamgbala.

Oloroke Grammar School and Okeigbo Grammar School faced off in the competition final.

Okeigbo emerged victorious after the game ended 2-2 and they won 6-5 on penalties.

Ogungbemi, who was a key member of the committee that organized the competition, said he will also help prepare for the upcoming Ondo State Football League.

He said the league will be hosted by Ondo State FA on a date yet to be announced.

Ogungbemi said scrolling through former players wouldn’t help, adding that this was the main reason the committee opted for high schools.

“We are looking to use grassroots competition to draft young boys in high schools.

“Overall it’s an U-17 competition. Those selected will continue their training and later some could join the state team, ”he said.

The Oluoke congratulated the committee for putting on a big football game for their birthday.

He also praised the state FA president Otunba Dele Ajayi for gracing the competition with his presence.

Ajayi said he was happy that the community incorporated the dream of the football association.

He urged the association to make sure to monitor the progress of identified talents. (NAA)
