Previous Morocco vs Spain
This is one of the most unpredictable round of 16 ties. Many football pundits said ahead of the World Cup that Morocco could be one of the dark horses in the competition and they were right: Walid Regragui’s men ended up topping Group F.
This is the second time the Atlas Lions, who defeated Belgium and Canada in the group stage, have gone this far in the tournament, having been knocked out in this round in 1986.
Meanwhile, rival Spain started the competition in surprising fashion by being relentless against Costa Rica (7-0) and recording one of the best games of the tournament in their 1-1 draw against Germany.
However, La Roja, who seemed to be one of the most solid teams in the tournament, faced virtual elimination for a few minutes against Japan, a game they ended up losing 2-1. However, Luis Enrique’s men were saved by Germany’s spectacular comeback against Costa Rica in the final minutes of their match.
Morocco
Yassine Bounou, who played the full game against Canada, will be there from the start, while Achraf Hakimi appears to have recovered from his ankle problems and will also play.
The North African side, who will welcome back Sofyan Amrabat and Sofiane Boufal after rest, have gone eight games without losing in all competitions.
Spain
As for Spain, César Azpilicueta is a doubt after suffering some discomfort in his calf, while Unai Simón will be between the sticks despite not having a good performance against Japan.
Spain, who finished second in Group E, were knocked out of the 2018 World Cup in the round of 16 but have never suffered back-to-back exits at this point in the competition.
Morocco vs Spain: match odds
Although this is shaping up to be a far from easy task for Spain, they are heavily favored by the bookies to win Monday’s round of 16 tie. The US bookmakers value a victory for Luis Enrique’s team between -190 and -205, while the odds of Morocco winning are considerably higher: between +575 and +600.
Morocco vs Spain betting tip and prediction
Morocco and Spain will meet again four years after meeting in the group stage in Russia, where the Spaniards drew 2-2 at the end.
Both teams have quality players who can decide a game at any time. It wouldn’t be too shocking a result for Morocco to surprise or for the game to go to extra time, although Spain are the favorites because of their young talent and experience as well.
Prediction: Morocco 1-1 Spain after 90 minutes (before La Roja beat them 2-1 after extra time)
Who will referee Morocco vs Spain?
The Argentine referee Fernando Andrés Rapallini will take charge of the match. Next to him are the assistants Juan Pablo Belatti and Diego Yamil Bonfá Paredes, while the fourth official is Raphael Claus.
