The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), through its Rural People’s Health Initiative (HIRD), dewormed 156 students as part of their medical activities in Lofan, Barkin-Ladi local government on the tray.

The NYSC-HIRD, which began its week-long free nationwide medical campaign on Monday, also donated food, toiletries, clothing and money to seniors in the community.

The coordinator of the state of the Plateau, Caroline Embu, chaired the deworming on Wednesday in Lofan.

Embu said the goal of medical awareness is to reach needy rural dwellers with basic health care.

She described the medical awareness, which began Monday with diagnosis, treatment and referrals, as 90% successful.

Embu said the deworming of students at LEA Gossi and Lofan Primary School was aimed at ensuring the children were also healthy.

She also said that the donation of food, toiletries, clothing and money to the elderly in the community was aimed at supporting them.

Fan’s Gwom Rwey, Mr. Dashwei Chungwom, praised the NYSC for its gesture to bring health care to those who live in rural areas.

He said the outreach would further strengthen the existing relationship between the community and the NYSC.

Likewise, Ms. Blessing Iruma, Oversight Officer of the Community Development Service (CDS), NYSC Headquarters, praised the medical awareness.

She said the turnout was impressive and people were enthusiastic and keen to benefit from the medical awareness.

Some students who spoke with the Nigeria News Agency (NAN) expressed their joy, saying they couldn’t remember the last time they dewormed.

The students thanked the NYSC for the free medical awareness, saying the law would allow them to stay healthy without their parents paying for the services.

Likewise, one of the elderly recipients of the donations, Ms. Naomi Audu, thanked the NYSC for its gesture.

NAN reports that as many as 700 people benefited from free medical assistance which included health talks and education, diagnosis of hypertension, hepatitis B and C, as well as HIV / AIDS. (NAA)
