The NSCDC commander in the state, Mohammed Sanusi-Bello, gave the figure on Friday in Katsina, while briefing journalists on the command’s activities in the period under review.
Sanusi-Bello said: “Out of a total of 1,161 cases handled, 256 criminal cases were processed by the command from January to December 2021.
“Criminal cases are primarily related to banditry, kidnapping, robbery, drug abuse or trafficking, rape, vandalism and other crimes, including burglary, smuggling of petroleum products, assault, fraud and identity theft.”
He noted that the investigations in some of the cases concluded in various stages of prosecution in various state courts.
“You may recall that among the high-profile cases handled by the Command I immediately took office in June 2021, there was that of Sunday Isaac and Hamisu Salisu.
“They were arrested in possession of 173 packages of suspected cannabis sativa, also called marijuana, and were turned over to the NDLEA.
“An alleged kidnapper, Abdulrashid Mohammed, and a couple of bandits and bandit informants were also arrested by the Command during the period under review,” he said.
Mr. Sanusi-Bello noted that the agency was using its Alternative Dispute Resolution, ADR, mechanism to resolve civil cases, to reduce the burden on the judiciary in handling criminal cases in the state.
“In 2021, the Command has received and dealt with a total of 905 civil cases of different nature, ranging from indebtedness, misunderstandings, land-related issues, conflicts between farmers and herders, domestic disputes, lease disputes, etc.
“The command has also responded to more than 80 disaster incidents across the state in 2021, where we provided first aid, rescue, transporting the injured to various hospitals, and evacuating dead victims.”
The commander said that the NSCDC in Katsina State also provided security at disaster scenes to prevent the crimes of some malicious elements that could use such occasions to commit crimes.
Mr. Sanusi-Bello stated that the agency under his direction, in addition to carrying out its main mandate, was also involved in the fight against terrorism and insurgency in and around the state.
However, the commander commended the people and Katsina state government for their continued support of the NSCDC in its fight against crime and criminality.
