NSCDC recovers 33 guns, others from criminal hideout in Imo

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC, has recovered 33 foreign-made semi-automatic weapons and 15 gun cleaning kits from a criminal hideout in Imo.

Michael Ogar, the commander of the NSCDC in Imo, revealed this while addressing reporters in Owerri on Thursday.

Mr. Ogar listed the items to include; 26 double-barreled pistols, five pump actions, two sniper rifles, and 15 sets of gun cleaning kits.

The commander said his officers, acting with credible intelligence on the location of the criminals, were able to ambush for a few days before invading the hideout and retrieving the items.

He noted that although the location of the weapons was different from the criminals’ area of operation, the Command was working closely with other security agencies to track them down, as no arrests have been made so far.

Mr. Ogar also said that an investigation was being carried out to unravel the suppliers of the weapons in order to arrest and prosecute them.

He assured the residents and indigenous people of Imo that they intended to return home for the Christmas season of the Command’s commitment to holding celebrations smoothly.

“Acting on reliable notice, we ambushed and after a few days we were able to retrieve these items somewhere in Owerri that we are now unable to reveal as a result of an ongoing investigation.

“The illicit possession of firearms is directly related to criminality and that is why we are investigating to unravel the suppliers of these items.

“We remain committed to ensuring smooth celebrations this Christmas and we assure Imo’s sons and daughters who will return that Imo is safe,” he said.

He called on residents to help the Command overcome the challenge of access to information by providing it with the necessary information on the movement and activities of criminals.
