NSCDC commissions female squad to secure schools in FCT, Katsina

By Kelechi Ogunleye

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) has established a squad of all-female combatants as part of its “Safe Schools Initiative”.

It therefore announced the first phase of deployment of some of its staff to schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Katsina state, promising to deploy more to other states.

NSCDC Commander General (CG) Dr Ahmed Audi made the revelation Monday, during a special parade, simulation exercise and team unveiling, on the parade ground of NSCDC headquarters in Abuja.

Audi asked them to take on the criminals without hesitation, as part of a quest for security stability in the country.

“The new team was created because of the unprovoked and senseless attacks on Nigerians by kidnappers and bandits, which claimed lives and left bloody images in their wake.

“This driving force and this initiative enabled the creation of the first group of women.

“It fits with my belief that women can and have made a valuable contribution to nation building. “

According to the GoC, with the recent government initiative for a safe school, the NSCDC has been bold in expressing its willingness to address kidnapping and banditry activities, in and around the environment of school.

He said the women’s team needed to complement the efforts of their male counterparts and work with sister agencies.

“As we meet again today, I urge you to strictly adhere to the Rules of Engagement, based on universal best practices in any security operation in which you may be involved, whether inside or outside the country.

“Officers and men also benefit from training opportunities throughout their careers, to enhance their ability to contribute to the corps and to the nation as a whole,” he said.

He further urged all stakeholders to partner with the Corps, proactively implement measures and take actions that will neutralize any form of aggression and ensure public safety. (NAA)
