NOSDRA, Agip investigate oil leak at Azuzuama, Bayelsa

Published

on

National Oil Spills Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) and Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) say they are jointly investigating an oil leak from Ship’s Clough Creek-Tebidaba trunkline at Azuzuama community in Bayelsa.

NOSDRA announced on its official twitter handle that preliminary findings during a Joint Investigative Visit (JIV) to the spill site,  traced the oil leakage  to a ruptured point on the pipeline.

The agency said that the spread of the oil had been contained,  using plastic booms while recovery of the leaked oil was underway as it was yet to determine the volume of leaked crude into the environment.

NOSDRA indicated that the facility was shut down to pave way for the JIV and repair of the ruptured pipeline.

“The shutdown of the facility allayed safety concerns and fears of  re-occurrence of an explosion which occurred five years ago along the pipeline in the area during a similar investigation and repair work,”it stated.

The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that a blast occurred in the pipeline on July 20, 2015,  which took the life of 13 people, including one regulatory official from NOSDRA and another from Bayelsa Ministry of Environment.

An official of Eni, the Italian parent company of NOAC also confirmed the oil leak incident in an e-mail response to request for details by a NAN Correspondent on Friday.

“Regarding your query about a reported rupture at Azuzuama, the matter is still being investigated; we will share the outcome of the assessment as soon as it will be available,” Eni stated.

Obaseki’s reelection is triumph of democracy – Gov. Diri

Published

on

Gov. Douye Diri of Bayelsa has congratulated his Edo counterpart, Mr Godwin Obaseki, on his re-election, describing the victory as triumph of democracy in the state.

Diri said Obaseki’s resounding victory as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), was a triumph for democracy and, indeed, the people of Edo .

The governor, in a statement issued to the News Agency of Nigeria , on Sunday by his Acting Chief Press Secretary, Mr Daniel Alabrah, observed that people’s power, as expressed in  Saturday’s governorship election in Edo  remained the most potent force in any democracy.

He, therefore, commended the electoral umpire for upholding the will of the Edo people in spite of reported pressure to unduly influence the outcome of the poll.

The governor, noted that Obaseki’s re-election would give greater impetus to development of the state as he remained  the most popular choice of the people.

“This victory belongs to Edo people, who have proved they can make their votes count. People’s power in any democracy is the most potent force.

“I, therefore, congratulate my brother and colleague, Obaseki, on his resounding victory as declared by INEC.

“His re-election has shown and proven that he is, indeed, a man of the people. So, I urge him to be magnanimous in victory.

“I also commend INEC, for upholding democracy and for allowing the will of  Edo people to prevail.

“Democracy in Nigeria will be strengthened when democratic institutions play their stipulated roles without undue interference,” he said.

The Bayelsa governor further congratulated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for securing yet another heartwarming victory in Edo.

He said that he was particularly delighted that all the states in the South-South region now belonged to the PDP family.

Edo Guber: IPAC commends Buhari, INEC, security agencies over peaceful poll

Published

on

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Lagos State has commended President Muhammadu Buhari, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies over the peaceful Edo governorship poll.

IPAC described the poll and its outcome as exemplary and recommended the same for the Ondo governorship poll coming up on Oct.10.

The commendation was made by IPAC Chairman, Mr Tade Ademola,  in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on Sunday.

Ademola said that the level playing ground allowed by the President and INEC had further deepened Nigeria’s democracy.

Ademola, who is  also  the Chairman, Alliance for Social Democrats (ASD) in Lagos State, urged that the standard already built in Edo poll should not be compromised in the forthcoming Ondo governorship election on Oct. 31.

“The truth about Edo election is that the people were determined, and that was what won the election. If people are determined everywhere and are not complacent, we will get there.

“It is better this time around, but it can be improved upon. We should be able by now to be conducting our election online.

“In the coming Ondo election, I hope they will not change style and that there will be a level playing ground for all so that only the peoples’ will will prevail.

“If the same template as used in Edo, is used in Ondo election, it will be a progress in the nation’s electoral system.

“Generally, this election was peaceful and fair as we could see. We cannot say 100 per cent perfect, but it was better than what we had in Kogi and Bayelsa,” Ademola said.

According to him, though there are areas to improve upon, the relatively peaceful and credible Edo election is a milestone in the history of elections in recent time.

He said that INEC could improve on timeliness of staff and materials at polling units.

NAN reports that INEC has declared Gov. Godwin Obaseki, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),  winner of the Sept. 19, governorship election in the state.

Obaseki polled a total of 307,955 votes to defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu who scored 223,619.

Why FG is investing massively in railways, seaports — Amaechi

Published

on

The Federal Government’s focus on railway and seaport development is a necessity to drive the nation’s economy, according to the Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi.

Amaechi stated this at the virtual 15th Annual Kaleidoscope Global Business Conference hosted by the Consulate General of Nigeria in New York on Sunday.

“Many Nigerians have asked why the construction of railways.

“Eighty per cent of the cargoes we have in Nigeria are mostly imported, because the Nigerian economy is yet to generate enough production.

“However, the president is of the view that if we must produce, we must have infrastructure that enables that production, hence the focus on transportation, power and works,” he said.

The minister said although the railway project had started before the President Muhammadu Buhari, the nation’s seaports were not included in the design.

He stated that one of the first things the administration did was to rework the plan to link the rail network to seaports across the country.

“So, we started with the Apapa seaport. We are working there now and I believe by December, we should conclude the Lagos-Ibadan rail line extension into the port.

“We then added the Warri Seaport, the Calabar seaport and Tin Can Island. We are making sure that all of them include seaports,” Amaechi said.

According to him, contract for the 386km rail line from Kano to Maradi in the Republic of Niger will be awarded on Wednesday.

He added contract award for the 1,500km eastern rail line from Port Harcourt to Maiduguri would follow on Sept. 30.

The minister highlighted other rail line projects in the country, including Abuja to Itakpe, and Itakpe to Warri, which he said had been completed

He said the Warri line would also be extended to the Warri seaport being developed by the federal government.

Amaechi also highlighted the government’s seaport digitalisation programme, which he said would be completed in 2021.

Mr Gurjit Singh, former Indian Ambassador to Germany, Indonesia and the African, described Nigeria as the giant of Africa.

Singh, who is the Chairman of the CII Task Force on Asia-Africa Growth Corridor, said the Nigerian rail sector had the potential to drive the nation’s development as was the case in India.

He urged Nigeria to take advantage of the Asia-Africa Growth Corridor initiative to access public private partnership funding for its infrastructure projects.

Organised by United States-based Kaleidoscope Business Project, the event brought together Nigerian state governors, ministers, business executives and prospective foreign investors.

The participants included Gov. Simon Lalong of Plateau, Douye Diri of Bayelsa, Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta, Samuel Ortom of Benue and AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara,

The Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Mr Isa Pantami, and the Minister of State for of Mines and Steel Development, Mr Uchechukwu Ogah, also participated.

They took turns to highlight the investment opportunities that abound in their respective states and sectors in addition to the invest facilitation and security measures in place.

Welcoming the participants, the Consul General of Nigeria in New York, Mr Benaoyagha Okoyen, said the conference was part of the government’s efforts to open more windows of business opportunities in Nigeria to the world.

“With the opportunities that abound in Nigeria, this Conference aims at identifying those investors that are able, willing and committed to long term direct investment into the Nigerian economy.

“And it goes without saying that those from the Nigerian side are as desirous to meet investors in order to establish mutually beneficial relationships.

“Let me emphasise the need for us to jointly work together to enhance NIgeria economic growth and industrialization on our shared values and sound principles of mutually beneficial partnership and on a win-win business matrix,” Okoyen said.

Edo election: Why collation is delayed — INEC

Published

on

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says that delay in the receipt of collated results of the governorship election from local government areas in Edo has delayed the collation at the state level.

INEC National Commissioner May Agbamuche-Mbu announced this on Sunday in Benin.

Agbamuche-Mbu, INEC commissioner incharge of Edo, Bayelsa and Rivers, is the commissioner overseeing the Edo election.

Addressing newsmen and party agents at the state collation centre, INEC headquarters, Benin, she said that results were still being expected from the 18 local government areas of the state.

She said: “This is to inform you all that we are still waiting for results from the local government areas.

“I am sorry we have to wait before we start collation. Only one local government has arrived in the centre.

“We are going to wait until at least, when results from seven local government areas arrive in the centre before we start.

“We do not want anybody to cast aspersions on us. So we are going to wait,”.
