NMA Doctors’ Games: South East Zone retain football event title

The South East Zone football team defeated their FCT Zone counterparts 5-2 on Saturday to retain their title at the sixth edition of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Doctors Games.

The Nigerian News Agency reports that in the final match of the competition played at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, the team from the south-eastern zone was the clear winner.

Joshua Nwankwo then opened the scoring in the seventh minute of the match, with Gideon Noah equalizing for the FCT zone in the 18th minute of the match.
Nwankwo restored his team’s lead in the 29th minute, while Sadiq Aliyu in the 35th minute equalized again in the FCT zone for a 2-2 draw that ended the first half.
Isaac Nwigboji from the southeast zone scored his third goal in the 52nd minute, while Silva Ugochukwu scored the fourth goal three minutes later.
However, Amabara David scored the fifth goal in the 75th minute.
The FCT Zone team fought valiantly but were unable to take advantage of their scoring opportunities until the end of the final whistle.

In his post-match remarks, Micheal Ilodianya, coach of the South East team, said that his happiness was that his boys fought well to win their last match.
“Congratulations to my players, because they fought well and made me proud. We won the last edition and we also won this year’s edition.
“Now what we have left is that we are going to prepare again for the next edition that we are also going to win,” he said.
For his part, the coach of the FCT Zone soccer team, Victor Omaonu, said that his players did well despite losing their match.
“Everyone did well on the field. My players did well, but our goalkeeper was not good. We are going to prepare well for the next edition in 2024”, he said.
