Nizzolo wins the Giro d’Italia Maglia Ciclamino after biting his nails second in stage 5

News Today 2

Qhubeka ASSOS team sprinter ( Giacomo Nizzolo took another second place at the finish of the Giro d’Italia after being knocked down by Caleb Ewan during the fifth stage in Cattolica.

The European and Italian champion also placed second in the second stage of the race, and so today’s result sees him take the lead in the points classification and he will therefore wear the maglia ciclamino on Thursday during of the sixth step.

After a fairly calm opening of 150 km of the race day, the 7 km of the very technical final, as expected, required excellent teamwork in order to position Nizzolo in the last kilometer. The Italian saw his opportunity and broke free on the left side, only to be beaten right on the line by the Lotto-Soudal man.

This result was the 11th second career stage for Nizzolo on a stage of the race, where he also won the points classification in 2015 and 2016.

The rest of the squad also made it home safely, with Domenico Pozzovivo finishing the day 18th overall.

Giacomo Nizzolo

Today the final was pretty technical and I think I did a good sprint but once again I found myself facing someone just stronger than me that day, I hope the victory will come next time.

As a team we did very well today, we had a good plan and we tried to make it happen. In the final I asked the guys to stay around me because I knew in the corners I could take care of myself and everyone was doing exactly what I asked. I’m really proud of them and with that attitude we can really look forward to the next sprint. This kind of result is a testament to the teamwork in our camp and the great spirit we have in wanting to fight for each other.

I want to thank all the fans on the team for their support. I really hope to give them a stage victory next time.

The boys have had good spirits and work very hard. It was weird to see that after 150 km of racing in a straight line, we had a very eventful final from the city of Rimini but they did everything this morning during the meeting: be in front, take the roundabouts like we wanted it. …. they really did a great job.

At 4.5 km from the finish, there was a really delicate point where it was very dangerous, but there everyone was still in a good position. And then Nizzolo made a very good decision taking the wheel of Tim Merlier who was still very fast and strong and then he had a problem. In the end, Caleb was really quick and beating us down the line, and it’s a well-deserved win for him, no regrets about that. We were close and I hope next time we can take the next step.

The runners took a huge boost in confidence starting today. When I spoke to them afterwards I thanked them for following the instructions and their commitment to our team, it gives us all a boost. Seeing Giacomo there means all that hard work isn’t for nothing and he’s getting the points jersey so they can be proud of.

We now look forward to the opportunities to come!
