NIPS: FG changes summit name to Nigeria International Energy Summit

By Edith Ike-Eboh The federal government changed the name of the Nigeria International Petroleum Summit (NIPS) to the Nigeria International Energy Summit. The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, made the announcement during the closing ceremony of the 4th edition of the NIPS in Abuja on Thursday. He said the changes were part of the government’s move towards energy transition and shifting the gas decade. He said the successful hosting of NIPS 2021 was an indication of the government’s resilience and determination to transition to a gas economy. “The NIPS narrowly escaped closure in 2020 as the summit ended a few days before the worldwide shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. “This year we have already had a good outing with the number of participants and the discussion we had, it is a testimony that NIPS is the event of God. “From today, the NIPS will be called the Nigeria International Energy Summit,” he said. Sylva noted that so far the summit has resulted in various developments in the industry, adding that the outcome of the 2021 summit would have more impact. Last year, the WalterSmith modular refinery was at the presentation stage, talks were still on making the final investment decision (FID) on train seven and the Ajaokuta Kaduna Kano (Akk) pipeline was still not on board. “Today, in 2021, we celebrate these projects as a reality and a milestone. It is a clear demonstration of how far we can go as a country, ”he added. The minister praised the cooperation of all stakeholders to ensure that the country uses its huge gas field to join the world league of industrialized nations. (NAA)
