Nigerian Army debunks alleged involvement of soldiers in Katsina gold mining skirmishes

The Nigerian army has discredited the alleged involvement of soldiers during an arms duel, as a result of a disagreement over gold nuggets in the village of Magama in the Jibia local government area of Katsina state.

Army Public Relations Director Onyema Nwachukwu denied the accusation in a statement Sunday in Abuja.

Nwachukwu said that the publication in some outlets stated that the incident occurred when the soldiers rejected an initially agreed offer of N500,000 per pit from the miners, but then turned around to demand more money upon discovering the large amount of gold nuggets. found by illegal miners in one of the pits.

He said the story is unfounded, unfounded, false, and a mere figment of the writer’s imagination, meant to tarnish the reputation of the Nigerian military.

According to him, no Nigerian soldiers were killed or participated in any skirmishes with illegal miners in Magama village on January 5, as reported.

Contrary to the insinuations spread by the online medium, the Nigerian army troops deployed in the northwest are engaged and absorbed in the fight against banditry and other criminalities that plague that region.

“They are not allowed to participate in any form of mining, whether legitimate or illegitimate.

“Aside from orchestrating discredit, fake news has the potential to weaken the morale of combat troops, erode their will to fight and undermine all operations.

“This is certainly not what the troops need at this critical time,” he said.

Nwachukwu, however, urged the public to ignore the fake news, saying it was invented to denigrate Nigerian army troops, who are working tirelessly to ensure that sanity and peace return to the northwest region.

He also assured the general public of the tireless commitment of the troops to decisively address the threat of banditry in the Northwest.
