According to him, this is the first time the federation will organise an international track cycling competition.

“No international competition has ever been held here in Nigeria, we actually lack officiating officers in this country when it comes to track cycling events.

“This is the first phase of the course as the pre-qualification course, the  second phase of the training for the UCI commencial course is  scheduled for July.

“This is the first time we are having something of this nature in the country,” he said.

He said that the essence of the coaching course was to build officials that will officiate during the competition in Nigeria.

He added that 24 officials are participating in the ongoing  training.

“We have 24 participants, they are not coaches but we call them commencials like the referee in football.

“We hope that by the time they go through these courses, when we come back in July they should be able to effectively handle the courses.

“They have got the basic knowledge and they have their books to read from now to July,” he said.

He said that an instructor would come from Italy to teach participants during the second phase of the training from July 22 to July 25.

“We have another training by another instructor coming from Italy, he will conduct another exams for them and those that pass the course will participate in the final and also get a UCI certificate.

“We started this programme alongside the riders in camp and they are also training ahead of the championship in July.

“We started with 120 riders and they have been dropped to 30. They train everyday at the velodrome,” he said.

NNN reports that the Track Cycling African Cup  championship will start from July 26 to July 28 at the Velodrome of the National Stadium.
