Boss Mustapha, the Secretary of the Federation Government, SGF, stated this on Monday in Abuja during a book launch.
The book, written by Dr. Manassah Jatau, a retired Deputy Comptroller General of the Nigerian Customs Service, is titled “A Sociology for Medical Practice.”
Mr. Mustapha said: “In a decade or two from now, Nigeria will become the third most populous country, after China and India.
“There is an urgent need for us to start planning for this increase.
“Right now we are dealing with the youth population and we have not been able to solve some of the complaints in the country.”
SGF thanked the author for his deep understanding of leadership issues in determining the effectiveness and efficiency of organizations, especially in terms of physical and economic wealth, as reflected in the book.
Mr. Mustapha further emphasized the need to develop Nigerian traditional medicine, adding that it would create jobs, develop the nation’s pharmaceuticals and improve its economy.
“The introduction of traditional medicine is also necessary. It will reduce the level at which Nigerians visit other countries for medical treatment, ”added the SGF.
Earlier in his welcome speech, Adewale Adeniyi, Deputy Comptroller General, Nigerian Customs Service, NCS, praised Mr. Jatau for a job well done, emphasizing that health and environmental issues cannot be overemphasized.
Mr. Adeniyi noted that the retired Chief of Customs left indelible marks in the service of the NCS, which are worthy of emulation, adding that the author has been successfully married between sociology and medicine.
Professor Ibrahim Njodi, former Vice Chancellor of Maiduguri University, who reviewed the book, said the book contains both knowledge of medicine and sociology.
In his comments, Mr. Jatau stated that “Man is a social being and his health is influenced by numerous social factors, and the causes of most diseases lie deeply in social factors.”
He explained that the book would help to recognize the cure, as well as prevent the onset of diseases and ailments, as it emphasizes healthy living conditions in the human population and eliminates health hazards.
Mr. Jatau, therefore, appealed to the government, academics, physicians and the public to critically review the book and use it as a basis for their discussions and research.
