UN-Nigeria Jubilee Fellowship: 350,000 youths, 9,000 coys register in 10 days – Yahya

No less than 350,000 young Nigerians and over 9,000 businesses have signed up to participate in the federal government’s Jubilee Fellowship Program.

The country representative of the United Nations Development Program in Nigeria, Mohamed Yahya revealed this in Abuja, while answering journalists’ questions.

Yahya briefed reporters with Ms. Ahunna Eziakonwa, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and UNDP Regional Director for Africa at the end of her official visit to Nigeria.

He said that the scholarship which is created by the UNDP was launched on August 31 by President Muhammadu Buhari, while the registration portal opened on October 6.

reports that the scholarship program seeks to connect talented graduates with local employment opportunities that apply their expertise, while equipping them with world-class practical knowledge and relevant skills.

Speaking next, the UN representative for the country said he expected more young people and businesses to apply before the portal closed on October 20.

“On October 6, the application for the Jubilee Fellow had started and it will end on October 20 and more than 350,000 young people have applied.

“It’s phenomenal and it tells you the need there as well. We expect more applications by October 20, which is five days.

“For this to work we need businesses to sign up as well, so far we have over 9,000 businesses that have signed up.

“It also tells you that the private sector understands the importance of bridging this education and skills gap and making sure that we absorb as many of these young people as possible,” he said.

He said he was confident that although the closing date was approaching, more Nigerians and businesses would apply.

“We have just started but we are confident, especially with the President’s commitment.

“This is a government initiative, but UNDP will provide all the technical and financial requirements,” he added.

“The Nigeria Jubilee Fellows Program (NJFP) is a youth empowerment partnership initiative between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
