Niger governor counsels vigilante corps on operational conduct

By Rita Iliya
Governor Abubakar Sani-Bello of Niger on Tuesday advised 161 special self-defense corps on the need to exercise caution in their anti-banditry operations to enable them to prevail.

Sani-Bello gave advice during the unveiling of the corps at Niger Police Command Headquarters in Minna to complement the efforts of state security agencies.

The governor also provided operational vehicles and motorcycles to corps on occasion, to motivate them to succeed in their missions.

He said vehicles and motorcycles should help them coordinate security operations in the metropolis of Minna.

“I am happy with this development; the police worked tirelessly day and night while fighting against the bandits.

“As we fight with the bandits, a new dimension has emerged in Minna, where certain criminal elements harass students and people going about their legitimate activities. This new dimension is unacceptable.

“After reviewing the situation, the police commissioner and the local government commissioner came up with this fail-safe suit,” Sani-Bello said.

He said the state government would not allow bandits or groups of criminals to terrorize the state’s students and farmers, while working to ensure a peaceful state where citizens freely carry out their legitimate activities. without fear.

He called on the corps to proceed with caution in their work, protecting themselves from criminals, who are both armed and dangerous.

Sani-Bello called on parents to warn their children and wards against any involvement in criminal activity.

Earlier, Police Commissioner Adamu Usman noted that the Special Self-Defense Group comprised nine volunteer security teams formed and integrated into the Self-Defense Group.

He said they were to specifically complement the efforts of state security agencies and also deal with cases of youth unrest within Minna.

“This group will be integrated into the vigilante, to help fight criminals and will be supervised by the police. “

Alhaji Abdulmalik Sarkin-Daji, the commissioner for local government and chiefdom affairs, said each of the vigilantes had received certificates of participation. (NAA)
