Niger governor advocates robust welfare for security personnel

Governor Abubakar Bello of Niger has called for a robust wellness package for serving and retired security personnel.

The governor made the call at the 2022 Armed Forces Remembrance Day emblem launch in Minna on Thursday.

Bello noted that the well-being of security personnel across the country should be prioritized to boost morale.

He called on Nigerians to take time to contribute to their well-being, adding that it should be often and not annually.

“What we are doing today is symbolic. It will not bring them back and that is why when opportunities like this arise we must make good use of them. This is to show that we support them.

“What we do today is show our appreciation for what they have done for the state of Niger and Nigeria. Some of them paid a very serious prize for trying to keep us safe. It is especially important in these days when we are faced with the insurgency.

“In Niger, for example, we are dealing with bandits. We have many security officers who ensure our safety in different parts of the state.

“In fact, because of what Nigeria is like today, the well-being of the security officers is nothing to write home about and that has affected their morale and motivation.

“I strongly believe that security officers, both serving and retired, must be cared for appropriately as a means of encouraging other security personnel to know that their efforts and their deaths are not in vain.”

Earlier, the President of the Nigerian Legion, the Niger State Council, Mamuda Baba-Ahmed, explained that the annual celebration of the Remembrance of the Armed Forces was to pay tribute to all those who selflessly fought for peace and unity of the country at the maximum price.

The President asked for a generous donation from everyone to the Legion to help the many dependents of the fallen heroes.

He also requested an operational vehicle for the group to facilitate movement.
