The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has appealed to Kano State Government to intensify youth empowerment programmes to deal decisively with the issue of drug abuse in the state.

The State Coordinator of the commission, Alhaji Shehu Abdullahi made the appeal in an interview with the Nigeria News Agency in Kano on Friday.

“With the empowerment, many youths will be busy, avoid immoral acts and be of good conduct in the society.

“The NHRC will undertake sensitisation campaign on drug abuse and drug-related violence in local government areas in Kano metropolis which include Dala, Fagge, Gwale, Kumbotso, Kano Municipal, Tarauni and Ungogo.

“We will partner with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Nigerian Police and Isa Wali Initiative, an NGO, for the campaign.

“This will help the general public to know how to reduce this problem and bring lasting solution to it.

“NHRC receives about 20 complaints of domestic violence daily, committed under the influence of drugs,” he said.

Abdullahi explained that the NHRC has also undertaken sensitisation of secondary school students and engaged them to visit detention centres.

He said that the aim was to open their eyes to the dangers of drug addiction and the punishments that awaited them.

Abdullahi added that the NHRC would conduct sensitisation campaign in additional secondary schools before the end of the year.

He advised members of the public to be security conscious, law abiding and discharge their daily lives peacefully.
