New gas explosion in old Havana injures three

A gas explosion in Havana on Wednesday injured three people in the same neighborhood as a similar explosion that killed 44 and destroyed an iconic hotel last week, authorities said.

The victims were a father, a son and a neighbor, local official Yamila Velázquez told state television.
“The boy's father had flipped the switch and there was an explosion. A neighbor suffered injuries to her legs and arms,” Velázquez said, adding that the three victims were taken to a hospital by neighbors while firefighters cut off the neighborhood's gas supply.
The latest blast comes just five days after a much more powerful one at the Saratoga hotel, just 800 meters (yards) away in Old Havana, killed 44 and injured 54.

Rescuers found another body in the rubble at that hotel on Wednesday night, bringing the death toll there to 44.
They continue to search through the rubble of the hotel, the first four floors of which were destroyed in the explosion, which an official said occurred while a tanker truck was filling a tank with gasoline.
Authorities said only one person was still missing Wednesday night and the search was continuing

A gas explosion in Havana on Wednesday injured three people in the same neighborhood as a similar explosion that killed 44 and destroyed an iconic hotel last week, authorities said.

The victims were a father, a son and a neighbor, local official Yamila Velázquez told state television.

“The boy’s father had flipped the switch and there was an explosion. A neighbor suffered injuries to her legs and arms,” Velázquez said, adding that the three victims were taken to a hospital by neighbors while firefighters cut off the neighborhood’s gas supply.

Authorities said only one person was still missing Wednesday night and the search was continuing “uninterrupted.”

The blast tore off much of the facade, blew out windows and destroyed cars parked outside the hotel.
