New defense spokesperson takes office and calls for media support

By Sumaila Ogbaje

The new director, Defense Information, Major-General. Benjamin Sawyerr took office on Friday calling on the media to support the military in fulfilling its mandate of defending the country.

Sawyerr succeeded Air Wap Commodore Maigida, who had been appointed on an interim basis following the appointment of the former director, Brigadier-General. Onyema Nwachukwu as the army’s public relations director in June.

Sawyerr was the commander of the Nigerian Army Bauchi Armored School, prior to his new appointment.

In his speech, he said the new posting was a bugle call to contribute his quota towards the achievement of the Chief of the Defense Staff (CDS) leadership goal.

He stated that the CDS’s leadership objective was to “foster professional armed forces capable of effectively responding to its constitutional imperatives.”

The spokesperson said the goal of leadership was being pursued vigorously and in a professional manner, saying it would require media support at all times.

Sawyerr said his responsibilities were to project the Nigerian armed forces, galvanize media and citizen support for all military engagements.

He said the military, in synergy with other security agencies, had continued to work around the clock to overcome the country’s many security challenges.

“These ugly developments, which continued to affect the peaceful coexistence of the citizens of our dear country, would soon be a thing of the past.

“So I have to be quick to say that the media, commonly referred to as the Kingdom’s Fourth Estate, is a critical part of the whole process.

“So let me seek the support of media operators in all fields to consider throwing out the sensational headlines that give undue publicity to perpetrators of crimes that tend to undermine our national security,” he said. declared.

Sawyerr praised the defense correspondents for showing great professionalism in reporting the fight against domestic and foreign adversaries over the years.

According to him, it is ethical and patriotic to be objective, fair and balanced in media coverage and reporting.

“I also want to encourage you to maintain these journalistic virtues as you redouble your efforts to support the AFN to ensure the necessary peace is restored to all troubled areas of our beloved nation.

“Let me assure you of an open door policy and honest, proactive and responsive communication parameters.

“It is important that we remain patriotic and responsive in providing credible, timely and actionable information to help the armed forces and other security agencies fulfill their constitutional roles,” he said.

Previously, outgoing Interim Director, Maigida, assured the new Director of the commitment and unwavering support of all senior management personnel towards the achievement of set goals.

Maigida said the media has been a true partner in galvanizing goodwill and support for the military in the quest for maintaining national security, peaceful and harmonious coexistence among Nigerians.

He urged the defense correspondents to continue accompanying the new director to succeed in his mission.

“I would like to express my deep gratitude to the officers and men as well as the civilian personnel for their dedication and commitment during this time.

“I urge you all to bring the same vigor and strength to our current director so that we can take leadership higher,” he said. (NAA)
