Two of the great teams in the history of the World Cups, the Netherlands and Argentina, meet this Friday in the quarterfinals of the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

After beating the USA and Australia respectively in the round of 16, and both experiencing scares along the way, a place in the final four awaits the victor when Lionel Messi’s Albiceleste take on a Dutch team that didn’t even participate in the last tournament.

The Netherlands and Argentina are no strangers to this level.
The South Americans were beaten 4-0 in the 1974 second round before securing revenge at home in the 1978 final.
A legendary last-minute goal from Dennis Bergkamp secured victory at this stage in 1998 for the Dutch, but Argentina came through a semi-final tie in 2014 as a penalty shootout was required to separate the teams.

Argentina’s focus in the coming days will be on getting Ángel Di María into shape after he was forced to miss out on victory in Australia.
Lionel Scaloni will be delighted to have the veteran winger back to replace Papu Gomez and complete his attack, with Julián Álvarez set to keep his place in the XI to join Messi.
However, the switch to three central defenders in the second half of the round of 16 tie may be something the Argentine coach is tempted to stick with early on in this one.
Netherlands vs Argentina betting tip and prediction
This is arguably the first meeting between two great footballing nations in the qualifiers for this World Cup. It may seem unlikely that we will get a classic and entertaining contest.
There is an element of the unknown, as neither side has faced a contender for the crown up to this point, and neither has reached top speed.
Argentina have the upper hand when it comes to talent, and perhaps a moment of magic will solve that.
Argentina to win, 1-0.
