NESREA says will ensure industries observe environmental regulations

News Today 2

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), says it will continue to ensure that industries in the country observe the National Environmental Regulations in their operations.

The Enugu State Coordinator of the Agency, Mr Pele Egbagiri, made the pledge on Friday in Enugu during the unsealing of KWO-Chief Investment Ltd at Obimo in Nsukka Local Government Area of the state.

Egbagiri said that complying with the already set regulations by the agency would help to reduce environmental pollution and other health-related hazard for the people living where such industries were located.

The NESREA coordinator revealed that the KWO-Chief Investment was sealed in April 2019 for violating provisions of the National Environmental Regulations, noting that the Agency unsealed the company after it got necessary documents and approvals for its operations.

“Following the facility’s compliance with those provisions, they have got relevant documents and permits.

“So, the Director-General of NESREA has directed that the facility be unsealed. They can go on with their production,” Egbagiri said.

He added that the facility would be kept under surveillance to ensure that its activities were carried out within the ambit of the law.

Earlier, the Managing Director of KWO Chief Investment Ltd, Mr Bababinta Abdullah, admitted that his company was sealed by NESREA for misconducts and lawlessness among which was wrong certification.

Abdullah thanked the Federal Ministry of Environment for documenting the facility, which according to him, led to the unsealing of the company and pledged to abide by the National Environmental Regulations’ provisions in its operations.

“As you can see, the place was sealed since over a year now and because of that, all the activities and business were shut down.

“With the commencement and go ahead we have received from the Federal Ministry of Environment, what we are doing now is that we are test-running because the federal Government asked us to change the modus operand of production.

“I want to assure NESREA that as a good corporate citizen of this country that the company is going to comply and obey all the rules and guidelines given to us,” he said.

On his part, the General Manager of the company, Mr Felix Ajakaye, noted that the unsealing of the facility would  improve the economy of Obimo and Nsukka, as it employs over two hundred indigenes of the community.

Also, a youth leader in the community, Mr Pius Ugwoke, applauded NESREA for unsealing the facility, saying the company was enjoying the goodwill of the community.
