NDLEA recovers 548,000 tramadol tablets and arrests drug lord

By Ibironke Ariyo

The National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) collected 548,000 “Tarkadol” brand tramadol tablets from Nkwelle, Oyi local government area, Anambra state.

Its director of media and advocacy, Mr. Femi Babafemi, said this in a statement made available to the Nigerian News Agency (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday.

Babafemi said the drugs were seized from the warehouse of a prominent drug lord Okeke Chijioke at No.3 Atunya Street, Maryland Estate, Nkwelle.

He said Okeke’s arrest on Saturday July 10 followed credible intelligence and surveillance, which confirmed he was filling his warehouse with illicit drugs.

According to him, after the search of his warehouse, 548,000 Tarkadol tablets weighing 302,500 kilograms were recovered.

“The suspect has accepted ownership of the recovered substance. A preliminary investigation has established that Tarkadol is a brand of tramadol which has just been introduced to the market to escape attention.

“The substance has also tested positive for amphetamines. The drug was also labeled 100 mg pain reliever on its packaging to avoid scrutiny, while lab tests confirmed it to be a 225 mg drug.

“It was further discovered that the drug was manufactured in India and smuggled into Nigeria without a NAFDAC number or certification.

“During the search of the warehouse, a double-barreled pump pistol with three live cartridges, whose license expired in 2019, was also discovered and recovered,” he said.

Babafemi said this was even when agents from the agency’s Benue State Command on a road patrol in the village of Apir intercepted and seized 28,400 tramadol capsules from a Dankawu Madaki on July 14, from Misah LGA, Bauchi State.

In a related development, a notorious interstate drug trafficker, Godiya Linus, based in Taraba who supplied narcotics to traffickers in Adamawa was arrested in the Numan region of the state.

Babafemi said that Godiya, a former convict, was in prison between 2012 and 2018 following his conviction on drug-related charges.

He said that a drug trafficker, Mohammed Ali, had already been arrested on July 10 with 1.150 kg of diazepam in Numan.

“A follow-up operation led to the arrest of Godiya who supplied Ali, while investigation has since revealed that he is based in Mayolope village in the Lau local government area in Taraba.

“It was there that he supplied Jambutu Park in Yola and other parts of Numan, using an unregistered boxer bike for distribution.

“A few days after the arrest of Godiya, another drug dealer, Emmanuel Ishiwu was caught with varying amounts of tramadol, exol-5 and diazepam, totaling 6.103 kg also in Numan on July 14.

“This was also followed by the arrest of Muhammadu Garba and Shaibu Haruna with 48,500 kg of cannabis in the Gurin region of the state on Friday July 16, 2021,” he said.

Babafemi quoted the president, the retired NDLEA brigadier. General Buba Marwa congratulated the officers and men of the Anambra, Benue and Adamawa State Commands.

Marwa applauded them for supporting the offensive in the ongoing efforts to eradicate illicit drugs from every community in all parts of Nigeria, accusing them of remaining relentless in carrying out their duties. (NAN) (.)
