NDE trains 100 on sustainable agricultural development scheme in Imo

The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) on Thursday inaugurated its Sustainable Agricultural Development Training Scheme (SADTS) in Imo.

The Director-General of NDE, Dr Ladan Nasir-Mohammed, who declared the scheme open in Owerri, said that 100 persons would benefit from the scheme in the state.

Nasir-Mohammed, who was represented by the NDE Coordinator in Imo, Mrs Ngozi Iheanacho,  thanked the directorate’s Department of Rural Employment Promotion (REP) for its  commitment to empowering the youth.

He said that the scheme was part of the directorate’s REP initiative, which was redesigned to reflect emerging trends in agribusiness.

“The training curriculum includes modern agricultural production, marketing and agripreneurial training.

“This is a way of investing in school leavers and graduates with passion for agriculture as an enterprise.

“Two weeks out of the three months duration of the programme will be used for theoretical training, while the remaining period will be for activities at the adaptive farm.

“Hopefully, this will help to achieve our objectives of employment, wealth creation and food security,” Nasir-Mohammed said.

Also, the Head of REP Department in Imo, Mrs  Chizara Egwim-Chima, urged the participants to take the training seriously.

Egwim-Chima said that NDE would assist serious minded participants to access agricultural loans at the end of the training period.

She called on youths to key into the Federal Government’s job creation schemes rather than relying solely on white collar jobs.

A participant, Mr Chibueze Okoroji, from Isiala Mbano Local Government Area, thanked NDE for the initiative.

Okoroji called on other participants to utilise the opportunity to endure a sustainable economic future for themselves.

Another participant, Mrs Nkiru Nwigwe, described the scheme as a dream come true, saying that she had long yearned for an opportunity to be trained in agriculture.
