The Nigerian Navy (NN) has ordered a new Landing Ship Tank (LST) from the Damen Shipyard in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, to replace its first set of LSTs, according to an official statement.

The statement from Naval Headquarters Information Director Commodore Suleman Dahun said construction of the ship began about two years ago and its inclusion in the Navy inventory would undoubtedly strengthen its maritime transport capacities.

In addition, he noted that the introduction of the LST would improve the transport of troops, military equipment and vehicles in the conduct of maritime security operations launched from the sea and the provision of relief equipment during national emergencies.

“The ship will be an essential part of NN’s power projection for enhanced maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea and beyond.

“It will also play a vital role in the protection of maritime assets, as well as public order at sea, thus contributing significantly to the promotion of global maritime trade, peace and security. “

The manager explained that the new LST has a staff of 32 crew and 250 people on board and a length of 100.08 m, powered by two Caterpillar / Cat 3516 C-rating engines and four Caterpillar C-18 generators.

Likewise, the LST has an autonomy of 15 days at 15 knots, if it is used for humanitarian and evacuation missions. It can accommodate over 450 people on its upper and lower decks on short trips, Dahun added.

As a reminder, the call for tenders for the procurement of the LST was held on December 19, 2017, supervised and led by a team from the Public Procurement Office as well as a technical committee from the NN.

The shipbuilding companies that participated in the tender were Damen Shipyards from the Netherlands, AnadoluDeniz from Turkey and Indian Shipyards GOA from India.

However, on June 13, 2019, the NN and Damen shipyards signed the plan and specifications of the final general agreement on the LST 100 and on June 13, 2019, became the date of entry into force of the contract, of which the duration was mutually agreed upon at 36 months.

The LST 100 keel-laying ceremony took place on December 9, 2019 at the Damen-Albwardy Shipyard in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, and was sealed by the former Chief of Naval Staff ( CNS), Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas, Dahun said. .

“Over the past two years, several Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) for various components of the LST 100 have been jointly and successfully performed by NN and Damen Shipyards.

“Most notable among these FATs are the main propulsion engines tested in 2019 and 2020, respectively, as well as the ranged weapon system also successfully tested in March,” he added.

Damen Shipyards is one of the world’s largest multinational shipbuilding groups, operating more than 50 shipbuilding and repair yards around the world. (NAA)
