The 6th National Youth Games take place in October – Ministry

By Olayinka Owolewa

The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development said the 6th National Youth Games will be held from October 10 to 19 at the sports complex of the University of Ilorin.

The ministry’s acting grassroots sports development director Bode Durotoye confirmed this to Ilorin on Thursday after inspecting some facilities for the games.

The Nigeria News Agency (NAN) reports that as many as 32 sports directors across the country are in Ilorin for the games technical meeting.

Durotoye, who was impressed with the facilities on the ground, praised the institution’s authority for adding to what was on the ground before.

“We are very happy, everyone praised the efforts of the University to maintain the facilities even better than the last edition,” he said.

He said the ministry was ready to host more games after the COVID-19 pandemic prevented the 2020 edition from being held.

Durotoye described the games as a production center where federations are looking for athletes to replace older ones.

“Some athletes discovered during previous editions of the Youth Games are on their way to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in Japan.

“We have no reason not to continue the games,” added Durotoye.

He said hosting the games is a matter of interest and anyone interested should come and study the facilities at the University of Ilorin and provide the better ones.

Speaking on behalf of the university, athletic director Olufunmilola Dominic said the school has been fully prepared to host the games since 2020 before COVID-19 disrupted plans.

She explained that the institution had made some repairs to some of the facilities and even provided more as needed.

“If you say you want to start tomorrow we’re good to go, all we have to do is make some clearances and the game continues.

“We have the equipment, even if they want to borrow, they can borrow us, so we are always ready,” she said.

She said the students will be on vacation for the first semester when the games start.

NAN recalls that Delta became champion of the 5th edition of the games with 41 gold, 32 silver and 31 bronze, making it the 5th time the team has won the fiesta.

Team Lagos, who made their second edition appearance after their 2018 debut, finished second with 22 gold, 36 silver and 14 bronze.

The third position was won by the Bayelsa team with 17 gold, 6 silver and 22 bronze. (NAA)
