Abuja, Nigeria — The National Assembly (NASS) don set fire for ground as dem dey review the 1999 Constitution wey don dey gather dust like bad pepper soup. Dis time, dem decide say dem no go handle am like before wey money just dey waka anyhow. Dem collect feedback from the people through public hearings wey don happen from July 4 to 5, 2024, for six geopolitical zones across the country.
As per the National Assembly, this constitution review na serious gbege! The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, dey lead the charge and e b like say dem get time structure for this one. No more billing politicians go chop pon enter plan wey no go work! Dem dey review important bills like local government autonomy and state policing, matter wey plenty Nigerians don dey shout for.
Many people wey don drop ideas for this review na people from different interest groups. Dem even bring proposals wey talk say dem wan create new states—we sabi how dem dey beg for more states like say na free gift. Opeyemi Bamidele, the senate leader, talk say dem don collect 31 proposals for new states and 18 wey wan create local government areas. We go soon see how dem go handle am!
The public hearings happen for places like Enugu, Lagos, Jos, Akwa Ibom, Kano, and Gombe, as different stakeholders, from traditional leaders to civil society groups, show their face and talk their mind. People don dey beg for various things, including special seats for women and the need to involve traditional rulers more in governance. Na real wah o!
So, after all dis wahala, the feedback go enter the senate, and dem go later send the re-structured proposals to state assemblies before the year run out. Na only two-third of state assemblies go agree before dem fit finalize everything. E fit be say dem want make the constitution reflect wetin people really want. But you know say Nigeria politics no dey easy—many people dey have doubts about how dis one go turn out.
As the clock dey tick, we dey watch closely how dis whole game go play out. Some people dey feel say dis na just another opportunity for politicians to shine and carry their self like say dem dey do us favor. But we sabi say, if dem no do right by the people, e go still backfire for dem.
No be small palava! We sure say as dem dey gather everybody for public hearings, dem for don hear some heavy concerns wey Nigerians dey shout. Na now we go see if dem go fit deliver tangible change or just more talk without action. Fingers crossed!
