Lafia, April 28, 2019 The Nasarawa Utd FC on Sunday beat Aklosendi International FC 3-2 on penalty kicks, to lift the state’s FA Cup.
The News Agency of Nigeria , reports that the match, played at the Lafia Township Stadium, had to be decided through penalty kicks after it ended 1-1 in regulation.
NNN also reports that the match, which did not produce a goal in the first half, came to life when Nasarawa Utd scored the first goal in the 56th minute through Yusuf Anas, who slotted home from close range.
The opponents, however, equalised in the 69th minute, when their danger man, Lucas Ambina, capitalised on some sluggish defending from Nasarawa Utd to level scores.
Speaking to newsmen after the encounter, Solomon Babaja, Team Manager of Nasarawa Utd, said that he was not surprised by the resistance put up by Aklosendi International FC, given the pedigree of the players in that team.
He commended his boys for fighting hard to lift the trophy, and described the match as “very tough”.
“Aklosendi gave us a very good fight. This is a local derby and Aklosendi is a pro-league side. They are a tested side and we have been struggling with them for the past two seasons.
“They have always given us a tough time. But I am happy that we emerged victorious today. We prepared for it. I want to assure everyone that we will not disappoint the state,” he said.
Mohammed Alkali, Chairman, Nasarawa State Football Association, appealed to the state government to sponsor both Nasarawa Utd and the privately-owned Aklosendi side in their quest for national honours so that they could make the state proud.
“With adequate support, I am optimistic that one of the teams will reach the finals of the 2019 AITEO Challenge Cup,” he said.https://nnn.ng/nasarawa-utd-beat-aklosendi-3-2-to-lift-fa-trophy/
