Katsina, Nigeria – On Friday, Nigerian Army troops carried out a clearance operation in Shawu Forest, Faskari Local Government Area, leading to neutralisation of 21 suspected bandits and significant recovery of arms and equipment. This operation, part of the ongoing ‘Operation Forest Sanity III,’ aimed to crack down on insurgent activities in the area.
The raid began around 8:50 a.m., as the 17 Brigade Strike Group assaulted a terrorist enclave after gathering intelligence on their movements. Dr. Nasiru Muazu, the state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, reported that the assault resulted in a fierce gun battle where the military engaged heavily armed terrorists.
“The intensity of our efforts forced the terrorists to flee, abandoning their camp and seeking refuge in the dense terrain and a river. We were able to follow and engage them relentlessly, even as they tried to escape,” Muazu said.
During the operation, troops discovered an extensive cache of weapons, including one General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), five AK-47 rifles, and multiple ammunition rounds. The military reported no casualties among their ranks, showcasing their operational skills and preparedness.
In addition to the firearms, the military also seized around 40 motorcycles and a number of rustled cattle. Governor Dikko Umaru Radda praised the troops’ bravery and professionalism in handling the situation. He affirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting the Nigerian Armed Forces.
“We are grateful for the gallantry of our soldiers. Their determination to ensure the safety of our communities is commendable. We will continue to provide our troops with the support they need to eliminate any threat to peace and stability,” Governor Radda stated.
As the military continues its operations, it remains vigilant. The commissioner noted that all recovered items are securely stored for further investigations. The morale among the troops is reportedly high, reflecting their commitment to their mission.
Meanwhile, unfavourable news has emerged from Taraba State, where gunmen suspected to be herdsmen killed over 30 villagers in Munga Lalau and Munga Doso communities. This incident raised alarm as the state government previously held a security summit aiming to mitigate conflicts in these areas.
In a statement, the Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas condemned the attacks and extended condolences to families affected by the violence. Communities are on high alert as security measures are reinforced to protect residents and prevent further tragedies.
