A coordination center for safe navigation on the Mekong River has been inaugurated in Myanmar‘s Shan state, according to a press release from the Chinese Embassy in Myanmar on Wednesday.

Under the Lancang-Mekong Special Cooperation Fund (LMC), the center was launched in the city of Taunggyi to crack down on drug smuggling along the Mekong River, share information on drug trafficking and organize meetings, according to the statement.

Zheng Zhihong, minister counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Myanmar, attended the opening ceremony in Taunggyi on Tuesday, he said.

At the ceremony, Myanmar officials expressed their thanks to China for assisting in launching the center, he added.
The Mekong River, known as the Lancang River in China, is a vital waterway for cross-border shipping. In an attempt to crack down on crime and ensure the safety of river navigation, a total of 123 joint patrols have been carried out on the Mekong River by China, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand so far.
The six Lancang-Mekong countries comprise China, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Thailand. â–
