The Commissioner of Police, Eastern Ports, CP Evelyn Peterside, on Monday, promised to ensure that businesses thrive at the Eastern Ports
Peterside made the disclosure in Calabar while on a working visit to the Eastern Port Police Command, Calabar Division.
She said that her goal was to ensure that there was growth of businesses in the Calabar Port by being proactive.
The CP, who also paid a courtesy visit on the management of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), said they intended to achieve better security at the Calabar Port.
She said they would do so by nipping issues of insecurity at the bud and ensuring that the port facilities were respected.
“The port is a very sensitive area, so, I believe that our officers sent here are very cool-headed and available wherever their services are required in the port to prevent any rift.
“On the issue of trespassing into the facilities of the Port Authority, I am here to let everyone know that this is not an era of taking laws into one’s hands.
“Community Policing which is an idea of the present Inspector General of Police, is to make sure that the people who are working around the port are in good terms.
“I have been interacting with stakeholders in and around the port, we will use the community policing tool to make sure there is peace here,”she said.
Speaking to journalists after a closed door meeting with the CP, the Port Manager, NPA, Calabar, Mrs Maria Asein, said it was important that the new CP familiarised herself with the port in the state.
Asein said the Calabar Port was relatively calm and the presence of the new CP would improve the security of the area.
“We are happy that the new CP has listening ears and would always be there for us whenever we run into any security challenge,” she said.
