Mother of Brian Laundrie’s letter revealed: “If you need to dispose of a body, I will show up with a shovel”
Roberta Laundrie, mother of Brian Laundrie, who killed his girlfriend Gabby Petito during a cross-country trip, wrote him a letter in which she offered to help him “dispose of a body.” This is the latest revelation in this infamous murder case that shocked the world.
Brian Laundrie killed himself after receiving this letter. Police say he killed Gabby Petito in 2021 while they were traveling across the country and published romantic videos of their travels. Petito’s body was later found in Wyoming.
The undated letter was in an envelope that said Laundrie’s name and “(burn after reading).” Roberta Laundrie wrote to him, “If you’re in jail, I will bake a cake with a file in it. If you need to dispose of a body, I will show up with a shovel and garbage bags.”
The letter was subject to a court hearing on Wednesday. Petito’s parents filed a lawsuit against Laundrie’s parents, claiming they knew of her death and took actions to conceal it from Petito’s family and law enforcement investigating her disappearance.
A judge ordered the letter’s release to Petito’s family. The Laundries’ lawyer argued that letter was written before their son’s trip with Petito and was not about her.
While the letter’s wording may appear unfortunately written in hindsight, its intention was never to offer anything serious. Roberta Laundrie said that she does not remember the exact date she wrote the letter but was trying to “reach out to” her son while they went through “a difficult period in our relationship.”
The case drew attention to domestic violence, and police footage showed officers in Utah speaking to the couple after they were pulled over in a traffic stop. They said they had been fighting, and police ultimately allowed them to leave. A review found Moab police made mistakes and missed signs of domestic violence.
Petito’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the police, and Petito’s body was found in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming in September 2021. Laundrie admitted killing her in writings found with his body in October 2021.
The case is expected to go to trial in May 2024, with Petito’s family hoping to have the jury determine the letter’s date of writing.
