Moghalu celebrates Sanusi at 60

By Chioma Ugboma

Professor Kingsley Moghalu, former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), congratulated former CBN Governor Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II on Saturday on his 60th birthday.

The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reports that Sanusi was born on July 31, 1961.

Moghalu, a 2023 presidential contender who served as Sanusi’s deputy while in the CBN, described the former Emir of Kano as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

“At 60, you had a huge impact on Africa’s largest economy as Governor of the CBN from 2009 to 2014.

“Your impact still resonates in Nigeria’s national affairs and more broadly, in the sphere of Islamic religious and social affairs, as a public author and intellectual and on the world stage.

“Not only were you honored as World Central Bank Governor of the Year and African Central Bank Governor of the Year 2012 by The Banker Magazine, but you were also named by TIME Magazine as the one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2011, “he said.

Moghalu said he remains proud to call Sanusi brother and friend and proud of the great job they have done together.

“I remember the world-class reforms of the Nigerian banking sector and payment system that we have undertaken at CBN under your general leadership.

“These reforms were simply visionary, courageous and well ahead of what was achieved in many economically and institutionally more advanced jurisdictions after the great financial crisis.

“I also remember with deep gratitude the role you played as a ‘helper to destiny’ in my life.

You invited me to my home in Nigeria in 2009 from my base in Geneva, Switzerland, and recommended me to the late President Umaru Yar’Adua for high level national service, as Deputy Governor of the CBN.

“Your constant respect and encouragement of leadership and professional competence in the service of the national interest is one of the traits for which I respect you the most.

“As Emir of the Great Emirate of Kano, and now as Khalifa of the Sufi Islamic Order of Tijanniya in Nigeria, you had the same consequence.

“I know that you will deploy your leadership influence in this spiritual order to advance your necessary vision of social reforms for the development and stability of the northern part of our dear country,” Moghalu said.

He wished Sanusi more prosperous and healthy years.

“As you celebrate your 60th birthday today to the glory of God your creator, happy birthday! I pray that God will grant you a long life.

“May your days be long on earth, Khalifa, and may the blessings of God abide with you and your dear family,” he said. (NAA)
