Aviva Intveld, a senior at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), has been awarded the Gates Cambridge Scholarship.

The scholarship allows students to pursue a graduate degree in the subject of their choice at the University of Cambridge.

Intveld will be studying at the Godwin Lab for Paleoclimate Research in Cambridge, where she will be researching the impact of past climate on the ancient Maya in northwest Yucatán.

She hopes to pursue a research career in paleoclimate and paleoenvironment reconstruction with a focus on informing modern climate policy.

Intveld has extensive research experience at MIT, including experience at the McGee Lab reconstructing the Late Pleistocene-Early Holocene paleoclimate of northeastern Mexico and exploring biodiversity in the Perron Lab. Intveld has also interned with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, World Wildlife Fund, and Natural History Museum of Los Angeles.

She is a strong presence on MIT’s campus and has served as the undergraduate representative on the EAPS Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee.

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship was established by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and provides full funding for students from outside of the United Kingdom to pursue a postgraduate degree at Cambridge University.

Since the program’s establishment in 2001, 33 Gates Cambridge Scholars have come from MIT.
