MFA Nasser Bourita Holds Talks with Sierra Leonean Counterpart

The minister reiterated Morocco’s support for the candidacy of the Republic of Sierra Leone to join the UN executive body

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita, held talks in Rabat on 15 November 2021 with his counterpart from Sierra Leone, Mr. David Francis, which focused on various bilateral and regional issues.

At a joint press conference, Bourita described these conversations as “very positive”, which confirm the remarkable dynamics experienced by relations between the two countries, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and President Julius Maada Bio.

Mr. Bourita pointed out that the relations between Morocco and Sierra Leone have undergone a notable evolution in recent years and a new impetus thanks to the road map, recently established between the two countries, which provides for the holding of a Joint High Commission during the first quarter of 2022, in addition to a Business Forum, with the aim of promoting cooperation between the two countries.

He also stated that the opening of the Consulate of the Republic of Sierra Leone in Dakhla reflects the firm position and constant support for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom and for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara. .

The Minister reiterated Morocco’s support for the candidacy of the Republic of Sierra Leone to join the UN executive body, in order to bring the voice of Africa and face the challenges it faces in the fields of peace and security.

Mr. David J. Francis praised the key role played by Morocco, in particular His Majesty King Mohammed VI in promoting cooperation in the region, since the creation of the Mano River Union in 1973.

It welcomed the Kingdom’s support for Sierra Leone’s candidacy as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the period 2024-2025, attesting to the friendly relationship between the two countries.

Regarding the inauguration, on August 30, 2021, of the General Consulate of Sierra Leone in Dakhla, Mr. David J Francis expressed his satisfaction with the quality of the work carried out in this regard, affirming his contribution to the protection of the interests of Sierra Leone in the Moroccan Sahara.
