Merkel meets Biden to help rebuild frayed trans-Atlantic ties

US President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Angela Merkel will meet as part of efforts to renew transatlantic ties after tensions sparked by his predecessor’s America First administration.

The meeting is scheduled to take place at the White House on Thursday.

The Chancellor is expected to start the day in Washington with breakfast with US Vice President Kamala Harris before meeting with US business leaders and receiving an honorary doctorate from Johns Hopkins University.

Merkel’s trip to the United States will also likely be one of her last overseas excursions as Chancellor before she leaves the world stage in the September election when she steps down as head of the largest economy in Europe.

The Chancellor has made more than 20 visits to Washington during her 16 years in office, with Biden now the fourth president to occupy the White House since taking office.

The Biden-Merkel meeting is expected to focus on measures to end the global coronavirus crisis, post-pandemic economic recovery, climate change as well as international security concerns such as the seven-year conflict in the eastern Ukraine.

Merkel’s White House meeting is also expected to include discussions on the controversial Nord Stream 2 pipeline to supply Russian natural gas to Europe via Germany.

The $ 11 billion pipeline project has been a source of US-German tensions, with Washington arguing it poses a security risk by increasing Europe’s dependence on Russia. (dpa / NAN)
