NOTTINGHAM, ENGLAND – MAY 11: Nuno Espirito Santo, Manager of Nottingham Forest, looks on prior to the Premier League match between Nottingham Forest FC and Leicester City FC at City Ground on May 11, 2025 in Nottingham, England.
Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo found himself at the center of controversy after a 2-2 draw with local rivals Leicester City on Sunday. The match not only secured Forest’s place in European competition for the first time in 29 years but also raised questions about their Champions League aspirations.
Following the match, Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis stormed onto the pitch in frustration, confronting Nuno over tactical decisions that may have cost the team a win. “There was a confusion over the situation with [Taiwo Awoniyi],” Nuno explained. “We made a substitution and then played with one man less for the last minutes, causing frustration for everyone.” Nuno acknowledged that football is steeped in emotions, especially when expectations run high.
Gary Neville, a former defender and commentator for Sky Sports, described Marinakis’ actions as scandalous. He stated, “If I was Nuno, I’d have a very strong word with him because that is an absolute scandal.” The comments capture the sentiment among fans who expected better from a club just returning to European play.
The match witnessed an emotional rollercoaster, starting with Conor Coady putting Leicester ahead in the first half. However, Nottingham bounced back with Morgan Gibbs-White and Chris Wood scoring to take the lead. Despite the momentary joy, Facundo Buonanotte equalized late in the second half, sealing a hard-fought draw for the visitors.
After the match, Nuno reflected, “Today is a tough day for everybody connected to the club. The players put in a dominant performance for the first half, but individual mistakes led to defensive lapses.” He added that despite securing a European spot, their recent form—with only one win in five league matches—has made them uneasy in the run for Champions League qualification.
Marinakis, who also owns Greek club Olympiacos, hopes to align Nottingham with UEFA regulations in the coming seasons. Football pundits express concern that while European participation is a significant achievement, the internal conflicts within the club could hamper future success.
Looking ahead, Nuno emphasizes the need for his squad to regain composure, stating, “We need to find solutions for the remaining two games.” Despite the pressure, he remains hopeful that Nottingham Forest can regain their competitive edge before the season concludes.
As the Premier League season winds down, Forest fans are left to grapple with the delicate balance between celebrating their return to European football and addressing the challenges that lie ahead in the league.
