Man, 64 threatens suicide if court denies him divorce

By Olawale.Akinremi

A 64-year-old retired civil servant, Amos Akinlolu, has asked an A-grade customary court in Mapo, Ibadan, to end his nearly three-decade marriage.

Man wants union with ex-wife Funmilayo called off because she was “unrepentant adultery”

Akinlolu told the court that life has not been the same for him since he noticed his wife’s “infidelity”.

“Monsignor, peace is now a thing of the past in my family since Funmilayo began to build a public tap where all the men go to fetch water.

“I can no longer bear to live under the same roof with an adulterous woman, because she represents a threat to me.

“I’ll kill myself if this tribunal refuses my prayer,” Akinlolu knelt down sobbing.

However, Funmilayo denied any wrongdoing, calling her husband’s claim groundless.

“Monsignor, Akinlolu has never surprised a man in bed with me.

“He kept accusing me of infidelity and that is the reason why there was no peace in the family,” Funmilayo said.

The Nigeria News Agency reports that all five children have agreed that the marriage should be dissolved for peace to reign.

The presiding judge, Ms. Imoleayo Akinrodoye, therefore dissolved the marriage in the interests of peace and quiet.

Akinrodoye awarded custody of the last three children to the Respondent, due to their age.

In addition, she ordered Akinlolu to pay N30,000 to Funmilayo to rent another apartment.

The judge also ordered the applicant to pay 10,000 naira to the defendant as compensation for “unpacking”.

Akinrodoye ordered Akinlolu to pay a monthly food allowance of 10,000 naira to each of the three children.
