This is contained in a statement signed by Lagos Police Command spokesperson CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
He said the Command found it necessary to respond and set the record straight for the incident which was captured in a video that went viral on social media on Saturday April 17.
He said two men repeatedly assaulted a duty officer and created a scene on the road in Oniru, Victoria Island, Lagos State.
“To set the record straight, on April 17 at around 10:30 am, an ASP Erhator on Sunday and the team attached to the command’s rapid intervention brigade (RRS), who were on a convoy movement to drop off police at their various battles across the state, stranded and stopped a white Hyundai SUV, MUS 251 EH.
“The car was facing the convoy one way, driven by the suspect, Victor, to the Four Point Hotel, Oniru, Victoria Island, Lagos State.
“When the police stopped the vehicle, the occupants, a certain Victor Ebhomenye and Etinosa Obaywana, angrily descended, confronted and violently assaulted ASP Erhator on Sunday, inflicting serious bodily injuries.
“The officer, who was armed with his official Ak 47 rifle, displayed a high level of professionalism amidst violent provocations by resisting the temptation to use his rifle on the suspect.
Adejobi said the main suspect, Victor, was in custody at the Panti State Criminal Investigation Department for investigation and prosecution in due course.
He added that the command was making efforts to stop his fleeing accomplice, Etinosa.
Adejobi said the suspect’s vehicle was seized and taken to the Lagos State Task Force Oshodi office for appropriate punishment in accordance with the provisions of the Transportation Sector Reform Act 2018. Lagos State.
He said Lagos State Police Commissioner CP Hakeem Odumosu praised the police staff for their act of maturity, self-control, perseverance and professionalism in handling the “drama” created by the suspect.
“The PC also praised the tactical application of law and order without any violation of the human rights of the suspect or anyone else during the saga.”
Odumosu therefore advised the police officers of the command to imitate the professionalism, maturity and perseverance shown by the attacked officer and his colleagues despite the provocations expressed by the suspects and his accomplice on the run.
“The police chief, however, warned against any violence or attack on police and other security agents in the state.
He said that such action would be resisted and that the individuals in error would be treated according to the provisions of the law. (NOPE)
