Local 5, a news station in Iowa, now has its own apps on Roku and Amazon Fire TV. With these apps, users can stream live newscasts and watch video on demand.

Understanding Tornado Watches and Warnings

When severe weather is coming, it’s important to be familiar with the terminology used in forecasts. Local 5’s weather team used a cupcake analogy to explain the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning.

A tornado watch means that conditions are present for a tornado to form, but one has not yet been spotted. These watches are issued by the Storm Prediction Center for counties where tornadoes are possible.

A tornado warning, on the other hand, means that a tornado has been sighted or is strongly indicated on radar. Knowing the difference between these two terms could help save lives in the event of a tornado.

How to Stay Safe During a Tornado Warning

Once a tornado warning has been issued, it’s important to take immediate action to protect yourself. The National Weather Service recommends finding an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, and avoiding windows.

If you are in a mobile home, vehicle, or outdoors, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris.

To be fully prepared for severe weather, it’s also a good idea to create an emergency kit and have a plan in place for where to go during a tornado warning.

Stay Informed and Stay Safe

By staying informed and understanding the terms used in weather forecasts, you can keep yourself and your loved ones safe during severe weather events. Be sure to check out Local 5’s apps on Roku and Amazon Fire TV for live newscasts and video on demand.

And remember to turn on notifications for severe weather alerts, which can be done in your browser settings.
