“Living in Bondage” Star Swanky Drums Supports “Asaba” Movies

By Anita Eboigbe

Nollywood star Jide-Kene Achufusi aka Swanky JKA called on stakeholders to better respect Nollywood’s “Asaba” films.

The term “Asaba” films refers to Nollywood films produced in the south-eastern part of the country and mainly in Asaba and Enugu.

This section of the industry is mostly looked down upon and its works labeled as inferior in terms of story production, which is a regular debate.

In an interview with the Nigeria News Agency (NAN) on Monday, Swanky recounted how his flourishing career began in Enugu, where he was first auditioned and picked.

He continued to make films mainly of this part of the industry until he was chosen as the main actor in the sequel to the classic “Living in Bondage”.

The actor maintains that there is no need to despise this part of the industry as it has given birth to several veterans and stars, including himself.

Swanky said, “They are looked down upon by other creatives and that’s where I come from. All of my homework came from there and all I’m trying to do is make relevant films.

“Asaba produced the movies that I watched growing up and that gave birth to the Ramseys, Genevièves, Pete Edochie and we are looked down upon today.

“It’s only a matter of time before we have the right kind of funding. People like Obi Emelonye and Charles Okpaleke are looking home to develop the industry and invest, ”he said.

Speaking about his role in “Living in Bondage: Breaking Free,” Swanky admitted he knew the film was going to be a hit.

NAN reports that the sequel, which features some of the original cast, received rave reviews in 2019 and ended its theaters as one of the highest grossing films of the past decade.

He said, “I was expecting a global fever. But am I surprised? No and it’s not because I think it’s okay. I don’t take fan love for granted.

“However, the main reason I wasn’t surprised was the amount of work, resources, passion and the kind of spirit that went into the project. Ramsey Nuoah and Steve Gukas are something else “, did he declare.

Swanky played Nnamdi Okeke, the son of Andy Okeke who is at a crossroads regarding the ghost of his father’s occult past.

His interpretation of the role won him massive applause, but the actor maintains that while he appreciates the support, he realized that the applause is due to being seen on a bigger platform.

He said, “The problem is you’ve been a surgeon for nine years and saving lives every time at the local hospital where you work.

“All of a sudden you’re doing CPR on a very important person in front of the world, and then everyone starts calling you a hero.

“I’ve been doing surgeries for a while now, so it’s hardly surprising. The difference is that it was a very popular case, ”he said.

NAN reports that Swanky has been nominated for “Best Actor,” a voting category in the upcoming Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA). (NAA)
